"Words to the Song"

When our father was sick and so very sick,
We didn’t know if he knew us anymore
But we went to his room, the family gathered round,
And then I took out my guitar.

When the music began he moved his lips
And soundlessly joined the song.
When the music began he still knew all the words,
And silently sang along.

And he still knew the words to the song,
Words he’d sung out his whole life long.
When other memories are lost and gone,
He still knew the words to the song.

We sang at his passing “Lift High the Cross”,
And the choir had one empty chair,
His barbershop fellows sang “How Great Thou Art”,
And his voice in our hearts was still there.

And we still knew the words to the song,
Words we’d sung out our whole life long,
When other memories are lost and gone,
We still know the words to the song.

The lullabies learned in our childhoods,
Then the ones about broken hearts,
The hymns are etched deep inside,
Time cannot tear them apart.

And we still know the words to the song…
